Concept/Project Description
SYNOPSIS:
In a small town plagued by corruption, water crisis, and widespread poverty, Bufereme and Tumi, two young friends, find themselves facing the harsh realities of a society on the brink of collapse. "Hangry Youth" reflects the anger borne from frustration and hunger, as young people like them struggle to survive amidst a broken system. When a police officer, broken by the very chaos he once took an oath to fight against, stumbles into their local eatery, the group is forced to confront not only the personal suffering of their fellow citizens but the deeper societal issues that fuels their pain. Ma’am Fameye, a tough and outspoken eatery owner, adds a dash of humor and tough love to the scene, as they all try to make sense of their anger, hunger, and the devastating state of their world. Amid tension, laughter, and shared food, they learn that even in a world immersed in corruption and environmental collapse, kindness and compassion may yet, be the key to surviving and rebuilding a fractured society.
CHARACTER LIST:
Bufereme: A young, thoughtful man who believes in change through compassion and rationality. Bufereme represents hope and the desire for a better world, often trying to calm situations with reason and understanding.
Tumi: Bufereme’s close friend, more pragmatic and direct about the harsh realities of life. Tumi’s approach to the world is shaped by survival and self-preservation, yet she shares Bufereme’s concern for social issues.
Ma’am Fameye: The tough, outspoken owner of the eatery. She’s protective of those she cares about but often hides her vulnerability behind a sharp, no-nonsense attitude. She serves as comic relief but also speaks truths about the world around her.
The Police Officer (Man): A broken man who has lost everything—his job, his family, and his sense of purpose. Once a figure of authority, he is now a symbol of the system’s failure, grappling with personal and societal chaos. He represents the disillusionment many feel in the face of a corrupt and failing system.
Clara: A young and naive girl working at Ma’am Fameye’s eatery. She is somewhat innocent, eager to please, but often caught between the demands of her tough boss and the harsh realities around her.
Crowd/Customers/Passersby: A group of inter-racial visitors who populate the eatery. They contribute and react to the tension between the main characters, adding to the sense of community, and the narrative. Among them is a foreign customer who has donated / contributed to the cause, adding an external perspective to the unfolding drama.
